TAX CREDIT- 2011

Save energy costs and contribute to a greener Earth by heating all or part of your home with biomass fuels. U.S. homeowners who purchase a 75%-efficient biomass (wood or pellet) burning stove, fireplace or insert during 2011 can receive a U.S. federal tax credit for 10% of their cost, up to $300.

More than 15 Harman Home Heating products qualify for the tax credit. Featuring the industry’s most advanced technologies for heat efficiencies, these products are also protected by a limited lifetime warranty. There are many designs and styles to choose from that will provide ambience, warmth and comfort to your home.

After making the purchase, simply download and print the official Manufacturer’s Certificate, which indicates that the product qualifies for the tax credit. You can rely on the certificate when preparing your tax return.

Note: For tax years 2006-2011, there is a $500 cap on home efficiency tax credits claimed by a single consumer. For example, if you claimed $300 in 2007, you can claim only $200 in 2011. It is important to note, however, that a consumer who claimed a $1,500 tax credit as part of the 2009/2010 tax credit, will benefit from the full amount but is not eligible for the new $300 credit.

2011 US Tax Credit Information

Information from the HPBA -

On December 17, 2010, President Obama signed a bill that extended many of the consumer tax credits into 2011 to help boost the slowly recovering economy.  The tax credit for the purchase of a biomass-burning stove was extended, but with additional restrictions.  The tax credit for 2011 is structured as follows:  1) a 10% tax credit, capped at $300, for a 75% efficient biomass stove; 2) the lower heating value (LHV) efficiency measure was removed; 3) the credit applies to purchase price only, not installation; and 4) tax credit is for 2011 only.  HPBA encourages all members to check with their tax advisors for further clarity.

Some important points of the tax credit are:

bulletTo be considered,  a stove must use the burning of biomass fuel to heat a dwelling unit or to heat water for use in such a dwelling unit, and have a thermal efficiency rating of at least 75%;
bulletInstallation is no longer covered as of the 2011 amendment;
bulletThis consumer tax credit is 10% (up to $300) for the purchase and installation of a 75% efficient heating appliance in 2011;
bulletThis consumer tax credit is for 2011 only;
bulletThis credit applies only to existing principle residences;
bulletManufacturers must provide a certificate of qualification for each product as required in the guidance which can be obtained for the customer to use;
bulletTaxpayers must retain the certification statement for tax recordkeeping purposes, but the certification is not required to be attached to the tax return;
bulletIf a manufacturer has documentation that a stove has already achieved the required efficiency rating, no further testing is required;
bulletThe IRS has not stated that inserts are covered, or are not covered, but based on EPA’s practice of treating inserts and freestanding biomass stoves in a similar fashion, manufacturers may choose to include inserts.
